CSV or TXT file formats

A comma separated values file (CSV) lets data be saved in a table structured format. CSVs look like any other spreadsheet but with a .csv extension. Traditionally they take the form of a text file containing information separated by commas, hence the name. Use CSV files with any spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel, Open Office, or Google Spreadsheets. They're different from other spreadsheet files in that you can only have a single sheet in a file, can't save cell, column, or row styling, and can't save formulas. TXT files similarly are useful for storing information in plain text with no special formatting beyond basic fonts and font styles.

Save your Spreadsheet as a CSV or TXT File

Note: Although these are instructions for Excel 2010, most software programs follow a similar process.
  1. Open your file in a spreadsheet program or open the spreadsheet program.
  2. Click File, then choose Save As.

  3. Under Save as type, choose one of the following depending on your need:
    • Text (Tab delimited) (*txt)

    • CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)
  4. Click Save.
    • You might see a message that your file "may contain features that are not compatible with (CSV or Txt)." This message is to inform you that any formatting you might have (such as colors or bold text) and any formulas won't be preserved in the file. Click Yes to continue.
